The Art of Restraint
Subodh Gupta is one of the finest contemporary Indian artists of our times, whose work is recognized internationally for its innately inscrutable flavour. The landmark monograph named—Everything is Inside, published by Penguin, brings together for the first time, over 20 years of Subodh’s work, and delving into the cultural, intellectual and biographical contexts of his work. Working closely with the artist himself and editor Aveek Sen, we designed the book to serve as a canvas for his monumental works and insightful interviews and essays included in the book. A great deal of effort was dedicated to understanding the pace of the narrative, allowing the work and content, ample space to be consumed in the intended tempo. The monograph was launched to coincide with an exhibition by the same name at the NGMA, Delhi in January 2014, curated by Italian art historian Germano Celant and presenting a mid-career survey of Subodh Gupta’s works.
